  • Menstruation

    What’s happening:

    Shedding of the uterine lining if pregnancy hasn't occurred.

    Hormones at play:

    Estrogen and progesterone levels are low.

    The feels:

    Cramps, fatigue, bloating, mood changes.

  • Follicular Phase

    What’s happening:

    Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates the ovaries to produce follicles, normally one becomes dominant.

    Follicles: Small fluid-filled sacs in the ovaries that each contain an immature egg (oocyte).

    Hormones at play:

    Rising oestrogen levels and FSH hormone released.

    The feels:

    Increased energy, clearer skin, feeling more social and motivated.

  • Ovulation

    Whats happening:

    A mature egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube.

    Hormones at play:

    Right before ovulation, estrogen peaks then there is a surge in luteinising hormone (LH).

    The feels:

    Slight increase in body temperature, cervical mucus becomes clear and stretchy, increased libido.

  • Luteal Phase

    Whats happening:

    The ruptured follicle turns into the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone to maintain the uterine lining.

    Corpus luteum: A temporary structure in the ovary that forms after ovulation.

    Hormones at play:

    Progesterone and some estrogen is produced. If no fertilisation occurs, levels of both progesterone and estrogen drop.

    The feels:

    PMS (premenstrual syndrome) like mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness.
